August

What's up people. Thought i'd head back here for a while.
Apart from the relentess sun, here's a few things i have enjoyed lately

The 2nd Fleet Foxes Album
Kurt Vile
Game of Thrones (kind of)
Hoop Dreams
Lemmy
Daniel Kitson podcast
Hawkwind BBC 4 Documentary - (not a fan of the music, but serious acid casualties make for pretty funny tv)
Miniclip online pool
Les Savy Fav - both live and latest album
Eastbound and Down

and thought the Killing U.S. version was terrible. But stayed with it for 13 episodes.

Melodies In C

soundtheory's regular reader knows that updates here are sporadic at best, my advice, if you want something abit more regular and links to music more than likely to raise a smile...go here...it's where i found out about Harper Simon, who's early 70's film soundtrack sounding sound seems to fit the oncoming spring mood perfectly. It will also give you the chance to practice that portuguese you've been meaning to...
in other news, here's a monster truck doing a back-flip

So, at the end of may I'm going to Barcelona again for thePrimavera Sound festival. As ever the line-up is a heady mix of the well-known, the kind of known and the unknown. If anyone has any recommendations of bands i might like to see, please feel free to share.

After a few days in Athens and Amsterdam, both enjoyable for different reasons, it's somehow geographically appropriate that I was listening a lot Maps & Atlases; whose Perch Patchwork album scores a solid 3.5.
Scoring a runnier 1.5 was Just Go With It starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston.

An occasional series based on shady personal recollection rather than wikipedia.
Sorry Phil Collins, but i've yet to see a better display of lead vocals/tight drumming (and yodelling!) than this from The Band's stickman. (from the highly recommended, Scorsese directed The Last Waltz)

5. Eat Skull (although not for the music)
4. Male Bonding
3. Jaill
2. Holy Fuck
1. Tweak Bird
Tweak Bird were awesome. Hat's off to the hard-riffing guitarist (even with broken thumb in cast) and his redbull guzzling drummer brother (on his birthday). From start "Let's turn this shit up" to finish "Dude. Get off the stage. we're done!"

Updates

Been a while, here's some bullet points:
1. Walkmen Gig. Excellent. Most of Madrid's cool kids were off watching The Vampire Weekend, allowing for a intimate atmosphere and front row spec.
2. Album of the week. Treats by Sleigh Bells
3. Films.
The Other Guys. Pretty good, but like a lot of Ferrell films, felt like they had the idea and then left it at that. Could have been a lot better and some of the editing between scenes was just wrong. 2.5/5
Shaun of the Dead. Classic. 4/5
Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Directed by Edgar wright, Starring Michael Cera, Music by Beck - yep, i think i'm target audience. 3/5
4. Football. Three wins and a draw. 2nd place. Heady days
5. Books. Finally finished Norman Mailer's Harlot's Ghost - about 1960's CIA. Never before have i thought about a book "it's good but about 400 pages too long." Currently enjoying A week in December - Sebastian Faulks
6. Arcade Fire tomorrow. Then Primavera Club from Thursday.
7. Hope you are all well muchachos.

Modern Relics

It's a definate Top 5 album of the year and probably the band i'm most looking forward to seeing at Primavera club at the end of the month. Here's Beach Fossils
And if you can't bothered to watch it here's an email exchange with Steve, to show what intellectual heights we reach on a friday

S: Bach Fossils house party
I: bach fossils? sounds interesting...i shall investigate....
S: yeah, loads of delay in the string section, awesome
I: classical!
LIVE UPDATES:

30" - seem to play songs double speed live. a good thing
1 min - they look about 18
1'15" - bez like stand-up drummer. nice
(S: spotted the drummer, thought he could be the new Ted - [cult 'keybaordist' from Windmill favourites - Roland Shanks])
2'05" - that's a good looking house party
(S: i was thinking that, you never really got those in Alresford)
3'19" - keg. classic
4'09" - "can i swear on this?" - manners. like it
conclusion 1: still don't think they have a bassist
conclusion 2: looking forward to seeing them

S: we should try to get a keg for your flat when I'm over
I. that. is. a. plan. Party Keg 2! I'm on it
i also plan to make a job lot of burgers to have in the fridge ready for any occasion.
S: I'll nick a whole load of brown sauce sachets. I presume the bottle ban is still on place on the airlines?
I: not sure it applies to brown sauce.
(already started on the ales 5 hours before the walkmen - i think this has a precedent - should probably have a power siesta)
S: last time i came over they confiscated 2 bottles!
that doesn't bode well!, maybe have a couple of burgers
I: yeah. sadly i've only got salmon in. which is no feckin' use for a friday
S: Amateur!

Slightly typical that you wait for a while for a good gig to come to Madrid, then 5 come along at once.
Vampire Weekend, The Drums, Wedding Present, The Walkmen and Method Man all play tomorrow night.
I've gone for The Walkmen - am more into the album now, and can hopefully limit pre-gig drinking to something less than 7 pints

Bank Holiday this weekend, so a heavily depleted squad for our second game of the season. Last week's goal scorers Fran, Lipe and Tonis are all absent - let's hope those left behind can maintain the winning momentum.
L-R: Fran Garcia, Ivan Rivas, Tonis, Ian Clark, Diego Vindeo, Ruben Gonzalez
Fernando Sanudo, Lipe Gonzalez, Manu Gobea, Fran San Roman.
update: hard-fought, bad-tempered 1-1 draw.

An occasional series based on shady personal recollection rather than wikipedia.
With that name and that haircut it's hard to imagine Terry Nutkins being a TV Presenter (or celeberity as I believe they are now known) nowadays. If he was, I suppose he would be patronised as a figure of fun, rather than someone knowledgable and passionate about their subject matter, who encouraged a generation of schoolkids to take an interest in wildlife. Looking like a denim-clad school teacher who played bass in a staus quo tribute act at weekends...the likes of Ben Shepard and that brash twat Vernon Kaye (© Simms' Dad) aren't fit to lace his Timberlands. Terry Nutkins....a name guaranteed to bring a smile to the face.

The Social Network Works

Saw The Social Network the other day, liked it. Alright it's a film about Facebook, but it's a film about Facebook directed by David Fincher, written by the guy who created The West Wing (which i've never seen but some people say is even better than The wire - unlikely) with music by Trent Reznor and a great central performance from Jesse Eisenberg. About 20 minutes too long and a pretty riduclous and expensive looking scene on the Thames, just to show how the social network site crossed the Atlantic, but its a better way to spend a couple of hours than trawling through Facebook.

Back To Black

Exciting day today - as it's our first league game of the season. notoriously slow starters (in previous seasons we've only picked up our first win after christmas) I'm actually confident we can get a top four finish this season - got some good new players in, I only hope they are not distracted by Racing Santander's ("our" team) visit to the Bernabeu tonight - where Mourinho is proving annoyingly effective so far. Anyway, after three seasons of red boots (we shared some good times and a few special goals) I've gone back to black and back to the stripes.....
Update: Comfortable 3-0 win

George Clooney Is...

Went to see that The American the other day, music video director Anton Corbijn's follow up to the impressive Control. I wasn't that impressed to be honest. For a movie that relied on tension and suspense it lacked tension and suspense. Clooney's a funny one...some films he pulls off well (The Oceans...Michael Clayton) other times he's George Clooney. In The American it looked like he really wanted to act, but the role would have been better suited to a number of other actors (Edward Fox does more or less the same role much better in Day of the Jackal). And George, fine, you can do shirtless chin-ups, but you can't run for shit. Good ending though and nice poster. 2/5
Also rewatched Anchorman - from a time when will Ferrell was at the top of his game. 4/5

Holy Feck

Basically I just do what Chimpomatic tells me.
After Titus Andronicus, The Soft Pack and The Drums, my new favourite band is the honestly named Holy Fuck. A welcome breath of fresh electronic air - like the time you first heard The Chemical Brothers. Lovely Allen is going to take some beating as track of the year - got to love that break on 3 minutes.
Turns out the Chief Chimp got married today - Congratulations Hombre!

Incidently, he's second behind 'Gates' if you type 'Bill' into google, beating the likes of Cosby, Clinton and Murray.

Crazy Heart

Watched that Crazy Heart the other night. The one in which Jeff Bridges won an oscar for his role of Bad Blake, an alcoholic country star on the way down. It's worth it for his performance alone...like a drunker, darker Dude. Much more heart than Walk the Line and those other musician biopics that came out a few years back. 3/5

Heroes. Part 4 Of X. Mike Atherton

An occasional series based on shady personal recollection rather than wikipedia.
I've known Neil for many years and over those many years we have agreed on many things: the genius that is the Handsome Boy Modelling School's The Truth, the genius that is Peter Kay's Softy Top, the genius that was the extension of England's licensing laws, but I had to draw the line when he confessed one day that he didn't rate Michael Atherton.
Whilst it seems that England are now pretty good at cricket, for a long, long time they simply weren't. Test after test, series after series, captain and opener Atherton had to carry the whole sorry shower on his back. Never an exciting batsmen (although the saying “textbook” may well have been invented to describe his front foot drives) but his wicket was the one all opponents wanted. He's probably most famous for scoring 158 (or 185 I think) over 10 hours against South Africa...TEN HOURS! Nowadays, the likes of Gilchrist score that before lunch, but Atherton was all about getting in and staying in, pissing off some of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of the game in the process: Donald, Walsh, Ambrose, Akram, Younis etc.
Me and Simms once saw him score a hundred against the West Indies at The Oval, except we didn't. After sitting through about seven hours as he laboured his way to the early 80s, we thought it would be safe to nip outside the ground for some refreshment. Not long after getting outside a huge cheer arose from within, it turned out a flurry of boundaries had brought up the great man's ton.
Oh well. I've had quite a few favourites over the years (step forward David Boon and Carl Hooper) but it's the stubborn legend that is Athers who I'll be most boring the grandkids with.

4 Films

Busy weekend on the film front. here's some concise reviews.

About Schmidt
Jack Nicholson on top form as recently retired and widowed Warren Schmidt taking a road trip and discovering "what it's all about" along the way. 4/5

Cemetery Junction
Gervais/Merchant bit of nostalgia about three friends trying to escape 1970s surburbia. Pretty good, a bit like that An Education that was out not so long ago, but with more jokes. 3/5

Hot Tub Machine
Fairly lightweight comedy with the occasional good gag. Just about worth an hour and a half of your time. 2/5
The Expendables
Does what it says on the tin. Pretty stupid, pretty enjoyable and doesn't outstay its welcome. 2.5/5
Music..been trying to listen to the new album by The Coral for the last hour....not good. Which is a shame.

Heroes. Part 3 Of X. Dick Trickle

An occasional series based on shady personal recollection rather than wikipedia.
Along with Japanese football team Jeff United, Dick Trickle shares the distinction off making the heroes list thanks to a comedy name. He drove racing cars, those American ones where they go round in a circle lots of times, pausing every now and again for the odd massive pile-up.
Now new footage has come to light of Trickle chuffing on a tab mid-race. His place in the hall of fame thus cemented forever.

Typical...

You spend about seven months looking forward to seeing a band, then you meet friends in the pub 5 hours before the start of the show and awake the next the day not really remembering the show, with an uneasy feeling of guilt at "having words" with various punters as they wouldn't get out of your way as you tried to head down the front. Regrettable.

I do however think the new album is frickin awesome. they're playing in madrid in November, so i'll try again (same night as newcomers The Drums though)
