After the disappointment of a cancelled flight to amsterdam on friday (thanks easyjet) leaving Muxloe flying solo in the city (word is that he coped) and me grounded in Madrid, I watched a couple of films up for Best Picture Oscars:

Up in the Air
Not quite sure how this has been nominated, nor for that matter Clooney and the actress that looks like Heather Mills. It was enjoyable, but ultimately pointless. 6.5/10
The Hurt Locker
This is the bomb! Terrible pun, great film, with great performaces from three guys I've never seen before. 8/10

Heroes. Part 2 Of X: Frank Drebin.

An occasional series based on shady personal recollection rather than wikipedia.

I'm not talking about Lieutenant Frank Drebin from the alright Naked Gun films, more from their precursor; Police Squad. Whilst I must have watched the Airplane films first (also produced by the Zuckers - leading the charge on the Coens and Farrelly's in the comedy brother production team stakes) were I to draw one up, it is Police Squad that probably heads a time-line of influential comedy tv series in a life that has watched quite a few.

There must have been some series I enjoyed before hand, but the likes of Desmonds, Home to Roost, Terry and June etc were exactly what they were, good old fashioned take-it-or-leave-it British comedy. The Young Ones passed me by, and, thinking about it now whilst I enjoyed Blackadder and occasionally Red Dwarf, they were no way big-hitters in the way Police Squad was. This was an entirely different kettle of fish – an introduction to spoof, to deadpan, to the entirely absurd. From the cop car light title scene through to the “freeze frame” credits, it was comedy gold from start to finish. Full of recurring gags such as brief cameos from Abraham Lincoln and Jonny the shoeshiner, with his word on the street, as well as killer lines that I can still quote now despite not having seen it for years.

“Who are you? and How did you get in here?”
“I'm a locksmith. And, I'm a locksmith”

Brilliant.

Heroes. Part 1 Of X: Alberto Tomba.

An occasional series based on shady personal recollection rather than wikipedia.

I was sat on the tube yesterday thinking about the letter G, don't ask me why. I then thought about Super G and then Alberto Tomba, who was more of a slalom-er than a Super-G'er (although I could be wrong with that, such is the danger of flying without the google-backed safety net), but that's not the point. The point is, that back in the day, when Sundays where still legally a day of rest ie, pretty dull, BBC 2's Ski Sunday with David Vine, along with The Antique's Roadshow, Songs of Praise and Last of the Summer Wine, was pretty much staple viewing. Whereas the other three were key contributors to the sense of doom that surrounded a winter's Sunday evening, Ski Sunday was a little taste of exotic, with all its cowbells, “up-up-up-up-up”'s and well, just the sound of skis on snow.
Apart from the UK's Bell brothers, who normally finished in the low 40's (in a field of 50) the only name I can remember from this time was Tomba, who bossed the slalom like a latter day Schumacher or Armstrong. He was Italian and had curlyish hair and probably for those reasons alone reminded me of a ski-ing Roberto Baggio. Not a hero as such (and few of these will actually be that) but a random sporting figure who bossed his random field for a few years back when I was a youth.

Example Of Steve Albini's Dark, Dark Humour - Of The Day

It must have been the broken boiler and subsequent lack of shower and subsequent bad mood that made me laugh at these lyrics as I got off the train this morning.
(From Track 1 of 1000 hurts by shellac)
To the one true God above:
here is my prayer -
not the first you've heard, but the first I wrote.
(not the first, but the others were a long time ago).
There are two people here, and I want you to kill them.
Her - she can go quietly, by disease or a blow
to the base of her neck,
where her necklaces close,
where her garments come together,
where I used to lay my face...
That's where you oughta kill her,
in that particular place.
Him - just fucking kill him, I don't care if it hurts.
Yes I do, I want it to,
fucking kill him but first
make him cry like a woman,
(no particular woman),
let him hold out hope that someone or other might come
then fucking kill him
Fucking kill him.
Kill him already, kill him.
Fucking kill him, fucking kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
Fucking kill him, fucking kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
Just fucking kill him! Fucking kill him,
Fucking kill him already, kill him.
Ah Fucking kill him, fucking kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
Kill him already, kill him already
Kill him, fucking kill him.
Just fucking kill him, fuckin kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
Fuckin kill him, kill him,
Fucking kill him already, kill him.

Kill him, fucking kill him,
Kill him, just fucking kill him.
Kill them already, kill them already,
Kill him.
Amen.

Well worth the extra 3 euros for the whole 3D thing (although the trailer for Alice in Wonderland was probably the best bit of 3D).
Whilst the overall message is about as subtle as a bulldozer, the script had some gems straight from an Arnie film and don't get me started on the "Oh i didn't think of that moments" - , it was definately an experience.
Not really had any interest in twitter until I discovered England Spin-bowler Graeme Swann's efforts. A sample being:

Alex Honnold

I've been watching an amazing series on climbing for work at the moment (called First Ascent - will try and find out when it is on in the uk - starts 17th Feb in Spain).
Was blown away by Alex Honnold, the world's leading "free-soloist" (ie no-ropes.) For someone as cynical and lazy as myself it really was inspiring.

Twentyten

morning folks and a happy new year.
had a good extended breakback in england, it was good to catch up with so many people in such a short space of time. Whilst back I treated myself to a new laptop - so hopefully I'll get back on the case and update this place a little more, please stop by every now and again.
Currently having a massive music overhaul, replacing tired old indie-rock, with some fresh indie rock procurred pretty much exclusively from steve and chimpomatic (not forgetting The Cribs' latest - from Papa Noel).
In other periods of downtime (the majority of time) i've been ploughing through the first season of Mad Men - very good. A comforting first step back into post-wire TV.
That'll do for now. Cheers.

Work It

I've stuck some recent work up online.
Including an award winning spot for FX
And another spot for FX that probably won't win awards but the series was surprisingly funny.

Pepelu Vanilli

I've stuck a couple of photos up from last month's gig. This one is of support band and friends of ours Ure Vimo. Pepelu, seen here in white shirt and playing bass showed remarkable 'cojones' (or balls) that night. Having met a girl on a previous night out he told her he played in a band to impress her. The truth is Pepelu doesn't play in a band of any kind, but he didn't think she'd show up anyway. When she did, he panicked and a plan was quickly hatched for him to join Ure Vimo onstage - which he did, with the volume on the bass turned down to 0, and mimed the whole 30 minute set. As he said afterwards "It was ok, I just didn't know when the songs were going to end." Legend.

The thought of Xabi Alonso celebrating a goal with Cristiano Ronaldo is almost too much to bear. Cheers Xabi - a great player. And a gentleman. Time for Dirk Kuyt to step up to favourite player status.
